Here's this week's hand picked tracks from that creative bunch over at SoundCloud. After last week's fairly chilled picks we thought a slightly more uptempo selection would be in order, so here we go:

'Electric Box' by Future Grey

Crafted by San Francisco based Future Grey, we agree with what some of the commenters have said, this has a Bowie feel about it at times which is, of course, no bad thing at all.

We like this track a lot and we are sorry we haven't featured Future Grey's music before now as he has been a part of our SoundCloud group since we started it a few months ago.

'interrupción-de-cuenta-a-cero' by heidellberg

Built on a chunky guitar riff foundation, this track by Heidelberg from Argentina picks up nicely about half way through when the fittingly distorted and spacey vocals kick in. Great Indie stuff.

'Time Lord Bangin'' by GMAN GROOVES

We just enjoyed listening to this track so much that we had to share it with you. These nasty sounding beats were made with Korg's iELECTRIBE (Gorillaz edition) by GMAN GROOVES from Mexico and we like it a lot.

It's that time again (where did that week go?) when we rummage around SoundCloud and pick three tracks that tickled our ears for one reason or another.

This week we've heard from a few iPad musicians on Twitter and had a number of additions to the iPad Creative SoundCloud group, which we are very happy about, thank you.

'Mr Brightside Electronic Love Song' by Michaelw

We LOVE this track because it is so interesting and different, plus we are big fans of Vocoders (it's a by-product of growing up in the 80's). Michael Wadlow from Wales here in the UK got his daughter to speak the lyrics from The Killers' Mr Brightside song to make this haunting, beautiful and mysterious track.

He used SynthTronica and SoundTrend's studio.HD to come up with something quite different to his other tracks on SoundCloud. Headphones will help this one sound so much more hypnotic.

'Battle Within' by freesoulsound

We had trouble selecting any one track from freesoulsound (a.k.a. Gerren Grant from Sacramento, California) because he covers so many different styles. We chose this one because we liked the unsettling and experimental feel of the track (and we love Animoog ).

But if you're in the mood for jumping around or maybe just nodding your head a bit more, check out the rest of freesoulsound's tracks on SoundCloud, and try not to get too distracted by the slightly saucy artwork.

'Mélopée' by nOtrO

Keeping on the ambient / minimalist theme (don't worry we've got some great uptempo tracks lined up for next week) here's a track by nOtrO (a.k.a. Sylvian Berthu from France).

Mélopée was created entirely in NanoStudio on Sylvian's iPad, and it builds to a solid rhythm that is quite entrancing.

'Nr One' by Kalim Stavros

We've been meaning to feature one of Kalim's SoundCloud tracks for a while now because he creates all of them in GarageBand on his iPad. This is his most recent track, an uptempo 'Funky House' affair which is proving quite popular over on SoundCloud as you'll see by all the comments.

'The track with no name' by Caustic Sunshine

Another musician we have been meaning to include for a long time is Caustic Sunshine, from just down the road in Bournemouth, UK. This beautiful, Animoog based track put together in NanoStudio on the iPad, really took us away from it all when we first heard it. One for those stressful Monday mornings.

Be sure to check out the rest of Caustic Sunshine's tracks, they're not all iPad/iOS tracks but we like them just the same.

'So U Think U Can Satch?' by shred_777

Timothy Kahlil (a.k.a. shred_777) hails from Sydney, Australia and he has some mean guitar licks going on in this Satch-fest, recorded using the amazing tones of AmpKit. We like it a lot!

After taking last week off over the holidays we are picking up our regular series again this week, highlighting iOS created music tracks found on SoundCloud. This week we have got quite a mixture of tracks and we are kicking things off with:

Fluid by The Plastic Band

We are absolutely loving the Gorillaz-esque feel of this track from Italy's The Plastic Band, described as a "Virtual Tabletop Band" in their SoundCloud profile. Whoever the person/persons is/are behind The Plastic Band track they have done a great job with Retronyms' Tabletop app and the track is very well produced, as are all of their tracks. Impressive stuff and now one of our favourite SoundClouders.

2012 by Landero

This track, created by Julian Neumann from Mexico, with Korg's iMS-20 app, has a fast running almost U2, sound to it. We like it a lot.

Hope (For The Lost Boy) by TheOxfordAmbientCollectiv

David Smith from Oxford here in England, created this track in GarageBand for iPad. Recorded as a live improvisation using the on-screen Piano in GarageBand, based on his reflective thoughts of that moment, David has created a loose but emotional bare bones track. Check it out:

Here's this weeks trio of tracks from the creative bunch over at SoundCloud. We are kicking off with:

'Balls - the game' by Sloman

A 2-for-1 deal from Slomen in Norway. The first part was made with the iMS-20 app from the lovely people at Korg and has some great riffs and stereo pans (try listening with headphones).

The second part was made with PixiTracker (an app we keep coming back to for experimentation) and is more of a retro arcade track.

'Big V In The Sky' by Tonwelle

Totally improvised in the wonderful Animoog app, this mesmerising spacey sounding piece by Tonwelle from Bonn in Germany is one of our big favourites this week, time to chill out for a bit.

'Bright Among the Faded (Light the Way)' by Christian Pratt

When we heard this track by Christian from Ottawa in Canada we were blown away by the audio quality and songwriting. The vocals are excellent and rich with a sparse but superbly produced musical arrangement. Most of this was recorded on an iPhone! It is one of the best iOS productions we've heard.

1.3 by qmartdes

Evgeny (qmartdes) is one of the most prolific contributors so far to our SoundCloud group. He was very excited about the imminent release of NanoStudio 1.3 (the Universal iPad version), so he created this track in anticipation.

It is a bright, summery track, exactly what we need to lift our mood on a rainy English Winter day.

Synthetica by El Brujo

Zdenek Altman (El Brujo) from Costa Rica created this track with GarageBand on his iPad. You may recognise the arpegiator if you have used it yourself in GarageBand, but we think he has made a great sounding Dance track with that classic Disco sound.

It reminded us of the soundtrack to an arcade game final scene - and that made us smile.

Chilling on the dentist chair by baouke

Bao Pham (baouke) is a ukulele and slide lap steel guitar player (and a dentist) who used GarageBand for iPad to make this mellow, laid back tune. We think it is a laudable first track made with his iPad. Here's what Bao says on his SoundCloud page about this track:

Since I'm a dentist in real life but at the same time I enjoy a lot making music, I decided to make a dedicated track to my profession! So this is a song I use to put as ambient music when I treat my patients!!!

This is my very first song done on the Ipad. Song was done on Ipad with my ukulele, Ashbory Bass and slide lap steel. I use Garageband to record and sequence everything.

Since we started a SoundCloud group last week a number of tracks have been added from musicians who have created music on their iPads. The range of tracks is interesting, from experimental ambient instrumentals through pop/trance to vocal productions.

As regular readers will know, we love to celebrate the creativity of our readers and let you know about what others are creating with their iPads, so we have picked a few tracks and posted them below for you to hear.

- The Wait by Jackfancy

It was a bit difficult picking just one track by Jack from Chengdu in China because he has a 14 track album on SoundCloud, all recorded using GarageBand on his iPad with vocals recorded via the iPad's built-in microphone.

He covers a few different styles in his album but we liked the feel and emotion of this one:

- UGLY by Indianstyle

Again, picking one track out of the twenty six tracks Indianstyle has on SoundCloud was a challenge. Most of them were created entirely in Nanostudio, with a few created in Beatmaker 2.

Much of his work has a futuristic soundtrack feel to it, almost Tron-like in its more atmospheric moments, which we love! We'll probably be coming back to Indianstyle in a future update, but here's one of our favourites for now, we especially like the way it picks up again after the middle break:

- Morning by qmartdes

Evgeny sent us a message to say that there are a lot of creative people in the Ukraine and he wanted let people know about it (as a Graphic Designer/Illustrator/Artist he also likes painting on his iPad too, here's his Flickr stream).

This track, created in Nanostudio (a popular choice on SoundCloud), uses every day sounds mixed with synths and different beats to create a lengthy but interesting mix. Listen with headphones and see what sounds you can make out.

A Few Discoveries

We are really looking forward to hearing what sounds you create on your iPad and featuring them here for everyone to listen to. In the meantime, here are a couple of tracks we enjoyed listening to this week as we were browsing around SoundCloud: 

'Mizu Ryu' by Keiran Klaassen

This one takes a while to warm up, but give it a minute or so and we think you might like where it goes. All the synth sounds you hear are made in the awesome Animoog app.

'Chill by Fire' by Li$hus

Made in GarageBand for iPad, this is described as a "A relatively unpolished ditty…", but we still enjoyed it.

'Funny Hearts' by Rumbleheyner

This one made us smile, it sounds like the soundtrack to some sort of manic cartoon. Made on the iPad with Ampkit+, iSequence and StudioTrack.

Plenty of iOS apps now have SoundCloud export built-in so it is easy to share your audio creations with the world.

We love playing around with GarageBand for iPad, which is probably obvious by the amount we talk about it here. We know that there will never be an album released with our names on it, not one that anyone would buy at least.

That doesn't stop us from crashing around these music apps and making all sorts of noises and just loving that we can do this with a tablet computer attached to a set of headphones, whilst sat in our lounge next to the better-half watching the latest trash TV.

We are fans of the resurging Chip Music movement so when we found 'Arcade Synth' in the Keyboards section of GarageBand we had to try and make something happen and set about making up a little riff over several sessions.

Here's a little excerpt from one of those sessions we call Arcadia Trill - made entirely in GarageBand for iPad primarily using the wonderful arpeggiator - posted just for fun and because we can now SoundCloud have their HTML5 widget working.

After we complained on Twitter this morning about the hassle we had trying to get a SoundCloud embed working on the iPad (well Safari for iPad really), SoundCloud tweeted us straight back and basically said, "Wait til later today!", and they have delivered.

They have just gone live with the announcement of their new HTML5 Widget, it's now an extra tab on the 'Share' pop-up and it works great. If you are reading this on your iPad, check out the lovely HTML5 widgetyness below (sorry about the tune, I didn't have much to use). 

Expect lots more audio goodness from SoundCloud on your iPad now that this widget is finally live.

Here's a nice sounding trance track made entirely on an iPad by Software Developer Rodi de Boer (@RodideBoer on Twitter). Here's what Rodi says about the apps he used (from the Soundcloud page for this track):

This is made on an iPad 2 with NanoStudio as the base. Sounds come from NanoStudio, BassLine and Addictive Synth and I used Hokusai for some sample editing when I got it to do what I wanted. Drum sounds come from layered and edited NanoStudio TRG samples.

Flabbergasting! That is the only word we can use to describe how astonishing KORG iMS-20 truly is. As a steady stream of iPad apps drifts past our field of view we are often amazed and surprised, but only occasionally are we flabbergasted.

KORG iMS-20 is a complete recreation of the KORG MS-20 analogue synth. It contains just about everything you need to create impressive tunes; sequencer, drum machine, mixer and pads, it's all here. Sharing your iMS-20 music could not be easier with the app's near perfect implementation of the SoundCloud network.

For those not entirely up to speed on analogue synths, the original Korg MS-20 has been used extensively by artists such as The Prodigy, William Orbit, Portishead, Jean-Michel Jarre and Daft Punk. Make no mistake, this is a serious piece of music making code and its arrival on the iPad is a watershed moment for iPad creativity. At its introductory price of just £9.49 (under $20) it's also a bargain.

As I write this the KORG iMS-20 app holds the number one spot on both the US and UK 'Paid Apps' charts, eclipsing Angry Birds, Cut the Rope and even Apple's own Pages. Clearly quality is rewarded on the App Store.

KORG iMS-20 isn't for everyone, but if you have any kind of interest in making music with your iPad you need this app, there is nothing quite like it on the iPad or on any other platform for that matter.

Perhaps it's because it stirs up long forgotten memories of hours and hours spent playing with Codemasters' Music game on the original Playstation, or because we secretly wanted to grow up to be Fatboy Slim, but from the moment we started creating mixes with Looptastic HD we were hooked.

The awesome sound quality, flexible mixing tools and excellent use of the iPad screen in the app's User Interface (UI) made our jaws drop.

This is an iPad optimised app done right, so we are going to dive in to the detail and tell you why you should go and buy this app for your iPad now!

An Overview

Before we discuss some of the main features of Looptastic HD in detail, here is an overview of the app's features from the App Store:

• Includes more than 900 high-quality loops arranged in Loop Sets that contain drums, bass, keys and effects for your remixing pleasure. Genres include Trance, Hip Hop, Dubstep, Ambient, Breakbeat, Drum ’n’ Bass, Minimal, Progressive House, and Reggaeton.
• Record your own loops using the built in microphone or headset.
• Includes 12 realtime effects with X-Y touch pad control, including Bit Crusher, Multimode Filtering, Flanger, Delay, and Glitchy Repeater.
• Automatically time-stretches all loops to fit the master tempo.
• Triple-zone mixer: Crossfade between zones for cues and breakdowns, apply effects to any zone.
• Unique Scratch Strip lets you retrigger a loop from anywhere in the waveform.
• Import your own loops in AIFF, WAV, or OGG format using an easy Web interface.
• Capture and export your performances to Mac or PC as 16-bit stereo AIFF files.
• Import audio loops from compatible applications via Sonoma Wireworks AudioCopy and Paste.

The Sounds

Looptastic HD comes supplied with a selection of Loops but many more (over 900) are available as a FREE download from within the app via the Loop Store button on the front screen. These Loop Sets cover several different genres, as listed below.

Armed with a ton of great sounding samples you can add as many as you like from just one Loop Set or really mix things up and select samples from different genres to include in your track (you can see this being demonstrated in the video above).

Each Loop Set has a mixture of types, colour coded so that the grey ones represent rhythm or percussion, the red are usually vocal samples (sometimes special effects), the blue loops are keyboard or synth parts and the green loops are bass parts.

You quickly become used to seeing these coloured loops and associate them with their function, which makes putting your own mixes together a lot easier.

We have to say again that the loops sound for the most part really, really good and enhance the experience and professional feel of the mixes that you can create.

Roll Your Own

There is the danger of course that using the supplied loops often enough can make your tracks sound familiar or a bit samey, and you will probably be able to tell when you hear a Looptastic created track somewhere else.

You are not limited to the loops provided with the app though. You can record your own samples using the built-in mic or the headset mic. This lets you incorporate completely unique and original elements into your track and is a very useful feature to have when you need it.

Alternatively, if you have an existing loop or set of audio samples in AIFF, WAV or OGG formats then you can import these into Looptastic via the Wi-Fi web browser interface. This is no small feature, this allows you to import virtually anything into the app and use it in your mixes, just think about it, the creative possibilities are endless.

We think this might turn out to be one of those sleeper features that someone is going to utilise to create a track in a way that we haven't thought about yet.

Audio Paste

Another sonic tool available to you is Audio Paste. This lets you record audio in one of the other 28 apps that support Sonoma Wireworks Audio Copy and Paste and then use that audio as one of your loops. Very nice!

Some of the apps that have Audio Copy support include Instantdrummer, DopplerPad, ThumbJam, PianoStudio and retro speech synthesis favourite Vox 3000.

Again, this adds a whole host of other soundscapes that you can introduce to your Loopstastic HD mixes.

The UI

The careful thought and attention to detail that Sound Trends have put in to the User Interface for Looptastic HD is evident as soon as you start using it. The app builds upon the foundation of Sound Trends' previous apps for the iPhone/iPod Touch, most resembling Looptastic Producer.

Our experience with the iPhone versions of these type of apps were, to be honest, a bit frustrating due to the limited screen size, especially when your mixes and performances got a bit frantic.

With Looptastic HD all the parts of the interface, that on the iPhone are split out on to separate screens, can now be found altogether on the main screen. Of course the UI has been optimised for the iPad's larger display and the elements look nice, sharp and very attractive.

The control layout makes sense too, with the 'Mix Zone' area at the top of the iPad screen being the main canvas for adding, removing and mixing the loops for your track, whilst the X-Y touch pad control takes centre stage in the lower part of the screen. The touch pad is flanked on the left by the Loop Sets and on the right by the Live Effects (more on both of these below).

At the very top of the screen is a waveform representation of the loop you currently have selected. It may not be immediately obvious what you should do with this Scratchstrip but try sliding your finger from about half way along the waveform back to the left. Yes, you are now scratching, stuttering and stabbing like a Vinyl DJ only with more accuracy and control, starting from anywhere in the loop.

It is hard to explain this but if you watch the video at the end of this post you will see all of these UI elements in action.

Multi-touch and Zones

Dragging a loop or clip and dropping it onto one of the three mix areas (Left, Centre and Right) starts them playing, but you can drag up to five loops at once with multi-touch.  This means whole sections of a song can easily be introduced to your mix at once.

Where you drop the loops is important. The nearer your loop is to the top of the screen the louder it is played in the mix. This can be changed on the fly at any time by dragging the loop up or down.

Which of the three mix areas you drop it onto is also important but likewise can be changed by moving it left or right at any time. The central area is always played but just below the mix area is a Crossfader control so you can play just the left and centre, just the right and centre, or a mix of the three anywhere in-between.

All of the above affords you an amazing amount of control over your track and sometimes you have to remind yourself you are doing this on an iPad!

Live Effects

To the right of the central X-Y touch pad is the Effects panel. This allows you to apply professional sounding filters to the mix as a whole or, more impressively, just one or two of the Mix Zones.

This is fundamental to creating professional sounding mixes affecting, for example, the vocals and synth parts whilst leaving the drums, percussion and bass parts untouched and 'clean'.

It is a very impressive feature that is demonstrated nicely in the video at the end of this post.

Expand Your Horizons

In addition to all of this, if you are fortunate enough to have two iPads, or you can borrow a friend's (this also works with an iPhone/ iPod Touch) you can hook them up via Bluetooth and the second device becomes an extension of yours, giving you a much bigger canvas to play on.

In the latest version of Looptastic HD, version 1.6, Sound Trends introduced BPM syncing between the two iPads to keep your mixes sounding awesome and allowing even more flexibility when introducing loops of different tempos.

Exporting and Sharing your mixes - We want to hear yours!

Looptastic HD records everything you do in the app when you start a new mix. You can save a track and play it back, which is just like watching a video of everything that you did during the mix session and you can skip backwards and forwards along the timeline too if you want.

You cannot edit what you have done directly in the app but you can export your mix in its entirety as a high quality 16 bit stereo AIFF to a computer via wi-fi for editing or conversion.

You can also send your track directly to SoundCloud, a free music hosting and sharing service that has a nice looking interface and more recently (beta) HTML 5 support for iOS devices (unfortunately not on embedded tracks, so you will only see them on SoundCloud's website with iOS devices). SoundCloud is fast becoming the site of choice for independent artists and established record labels to share new music and even ordinary members of the public like us to share our musical creations with the world.

There's More

There is so much more to this app that we don't have room to cover. Really, the best way to find out is to get the app and explore it for yourself.  The more you play with it and experiment with the sounds and mixing them together the more you will appreciate the power of this app.

It is easy to get caught up in this app and lose hours without realising it, especially if you have harboured secret DJ fantasies for many years.

Yes we know you aren't going to be replacing the professional DJ at an Ibiza nightclub, so please don't scoff at us for being so impressed by an iPad app if you are 'in the trade' as a professional sound master, but for the rest of us who love to create something new with quite a bit of help getting started, Sound Trends have designed and built a real winner here in Looptastic HD.

In Comparison to Groovemaker

As you can tell, we loved Looptastic HD. We also loved playing with Groovemaker for iPad when we reviewed it a few months ago.

If there is one thing we think may put people off about Looptastic HD, it is the price, but it shouldn't. When you compare it to other loop mixing apps like Groovemaker (Free initial download) for example, Looptastic HD initially feels a bit pricey at $14.99 (£8.99).

But add into the Groovemaker price the different Packs, all but one at $9.99 (£5.99) each, it soon adds up and with Looptastic all the loops come as a free download once you have paid out initially.

The two apps do not compare directly either, the Groovemaker for iPad UI is completely different and the approach to the mix sessions is also different to Looptastic.  We think Looptastic is probably more immediately accessible, but both apps have deeper controls and flexibility in their approach that is only found when spending more time with them.

Groovemaker probably has the edge as far as creating a custom version of your mix goes because it allows you to record different grooves and allows you to stitch them together before exporting.

Looptastic is more flexible or expandable due to the Audio Paste and Loop import options, which Groovemaker does not have, so there are unique features in both apps and which one you go for depends on what you want to do with the app and the interface you prefer.
