Entries in Ludovico Einaudi (1)

Ludovico Einaudi performs live on the BBC using 2 iPads

I'm a massive Ludovico Einaudi fan, his music has formed the soundtrack to much of my life during the last 6 years or so. I've had the honour of seeing him perform at The Royal Albert Hall and The Barbican Centre, experiences that I will never forget.

The Italian contemporary music composer and pianist is widely regarded as one of greatest composers of our time. His elegant and open music has been used in countless movies and TV shows, so much so in fact, that there is a very good chance that you have heard many Einaudi classics even if you didn't realise that Einaudi composed them.

We found out this evening that Einaudi uses the iPad to record ideas whilst travelling. In a BBC interview back in June, Einaudi performed I Giorni live on the show using 2 iPads, one for the left hand running GarageBand and the other for the right hand running ThumbJam.

As he finishes performing I Giorni with a huge smile, it's clear that this isn't the face of a musician who is frustrated by the limitations of expressing emotion with this digital device. He seems genuinely enthused by Apple's multi-touch wonder device.

As expected Einaudi prefers a Steinway piano for his live performances, but he mentions during the brief interview that he uses the iPad for his 'sketches' and for practicing musical ideas whilst travelling.

Just as we had always hoped, the iPad is fast becoming the computer that we had always craved for.

Islands by Ludovico Einaudi is a superb introduction to his beautiful music. Also, be sure to follow him on Twitter.

In the video above Einaudi can be seen using GarageBand and ThumbJam.

Many thanks for David Gilson for informing me on Twitter about the BBC interview.
