Kids Making Apps and Inspiration

You have probably seen the video below of Thomas Suarez, a 12 year old student from the South Bay of Los Angeles, who recently spoke at TedxManhattanBeach.

In his presentation Thomas speaks about how he loves computers, how he has been fascinated with them from an early age, how Apple's SDK resources helped him get going to create his first app and even how Apple staff at the App store have encouraged him.

Steve-like

Perhaps his greatest inspiration though can be seen in Thomas' on-stage mannerisms. Take a look at the video and see if you are reminded of anyone (recently departed and sorely missed at Apple) in the way he speaks, poses questions, and even the way he shrugs when the audience is laughing at his comment about students knowing more than their teachers.

Inspiration and Aspiration

Although we have to be honest and say that we probably wouldn't buy any of Thomas' apps (we're not really the target audience), we do think Thomas' approach and attitude is an inspiration, both to other students who are thinking of giving App development a go and to adults who have been dabbling or are doubting that they can do it.

Thomas is obviously a very bright and talented young man, with his own company CarrotCorp and big plans for the future. His example though shows that with a bit of creativity and a passion for developing, age is no barrier to what can be achieved.

Teachers / Educators also have another example to help support investment in subjects such as Computer Studies, App development and including IT in the Curriculum.

What do you think about Thomas' speech?

30 iPad Paintings in 30 Days

30/30Regular readers and members of our iPad Flickr group may already be familiar with Susan Murtaugh's inspirational and truly impressive iPad art, we are big fans of her work here.

The 30/30 Project

Suzi began a particularly challenging project a few days ago. From 21st October Suzi and 6 other (non-iPad) artists will be producing one painting each day for 30 days.

The paintings will be exhibited in a show at the Peninsula Art School in Fish Creek, Wisconsin running from 11th November to 30th December this year.

Suzi will be the first iPad artist to exhibit in this gallery and her paintings will be printed onto archival paper and exhibited alongside the other artists' work.

Suzi's hard work will culminate in a special iPad Fingerpainting Demo on 19th November when she will paint the last of her 30 images in front of an audience.

We are sure that, like us, you will blown away by Suzi's talent and wish her all the best in completing this challenge.

Follow Along

You can follow Suzi's Flickr stream to see her paintings as she posts them and keep up with her progress on the 30 paintings in 30 days challenge, we're sure she would appreciate your encouraging comments too.

Below we have included Suzi's first 2 iPad paintings to whet your appetite. They are beautifully painted and detailed as always and we are loving the 'hidden' numbering too.

If you are able to make it along to the Peninsula Art School to see the exhibition, especially if you attend Suzi's Fingerpainting Demo on the 19th, we would love to hear what you thought in the comments.

Browse for Inspiration with free Galleried app

Galleried is an app that provides you with some stellar examples of current web design and a way to save (favourite) any designs you particularly like and/or want to refer back to in future.

The list is curated from sources such as CSS Mania, Creattica, Unmatched Style, and other sources which you may already be familiar with, but Galleried brings them all together in a very simple and fast working interface.

The app contains its own browser so that you always have access at any moment to the favourites icon (the little heart top left of the preview window) or so that you can return to the gallery of curated site designs by pressing the close icon (top right).

We found a lot of sites that we liked in just a few minutes of using Galleried and it has also had the side benefit of introducing us to products and services we didn't know about before such as iCyte.com.

Galleried is available Free on the app store, check it out now.
