iPad in 2011 - Where Are We Headed?

As we move into a new year we are naturally wondering what the future holds for iPad hardware and software development and which direction we are headed. There are many rumours and wonderful ideas being posted around the Web, especially regarding the new iPad expected around Spring.

But we would like to know what you want to see in 2011 and what you think will happen in the iPad sphere over the next 12 months.

We don't just mean 'iPad 2', we want to know what other hardware or software (iOS/Apps) developments you can see on the horizon for 2011. What new things are we in for? What can you see changing?

We think it is going to be a bumper year for iPad as Apple builds on the success of its first 9 months and with a rumoured 65 million screens on order for iPad 2 we are expecting massive growth in the user base.

So let us know in the comments below your wish-lists, ideas or expectations for iPad in 2011. We will post the best ones on our Twitter and Facebook pages.

I expect Apple to make a shocking announcement... they're pulling out of the tablet and phone businesses to focus on the Mac platform... ;-)

I have been saying it for years, eventually Apple will take the iMac platform and make it detach from the stand so you can take it with you. We saw in the Lion OS X screens that the new format for iOS like app display for MAC. I think take that new Lion iOS layout + an imac mobile concept + touch screen in a 12"-15" screen size and we have the future of mac. The cloud will be the enabler for all of this. The recently discussed Chrome OS laptop demonstrated heavy software application on the coud and the ipad/imac concept would do that and more...

or i could be completely wrong, but we can all dream cant we?

No more iPod classic. Next shuffle built into high quality headphones - no cords except to recharge or synch. Nano price lowered to $99 and up. iTunes on the cloud accessible via browser from any one of various devices at a time. 4G iPhone usable on any appropriate network of users choice - can change carriers and countries keeping same unit just with different carrier card. iPod touch no major changes. Easier to use and setup home theatre audio. Canadian prices at par to US prices on all products. New Intel CPU with graphics integrated used on low end MacBooks. Home automation systems introduced as newest "hobby" after success of last "hobby" (Apple TV).

@Paul - It seems a shame that we can joke about it, but you never know, there may be a new Mac that Apple have hidden up their sleeve. ^_^ A new approach to MacOS is the way it seems to be going though.

@KevinBee - That idea doesn't sound too radical to us! Do you see the iPad as the screen element of the system, docking with a base unit? Maybe a Mac Mini that does the more processor hungry stuff like photo and video editing or 3D that the iPad cannot handle so well?

Great ideas!

@Gtj - That all sounds entirely plausible, the Shuffle headphones would be even better if we could also use them with our iPad as Bluetooth headphones for watching video and playing games or music apps.

Home automation may be one of the new consumer market areas that everyone seems to think Apple needs in order to continue their innovation.

Thanks for commenting!

2011 wishlist:

 • Dvorak software keyboard on iPad/iPhone (possible, they support dvorak on hardware keyboards)
• That lazy Filterstorm developer to finish Filterstorm Pro & Filterstorm 3
• iTunes subscription TV/Movie service (doubt it will happen)
• iWork '11 (should get this one soon, iWork is highly underrated)
• iTunes rewrite
• Split off all the iPhone/iPad syncing stuff into its own app, not part of iTunes (not gonna happen)
• OTA software updates on iOS devices other than AppleTV which does this already
 • iOS API access to iPad camera connection kit (not gonna happen)
• Filterstorm Pro on Mac
• iOS notification system overhaul
• OS X growl-like notification system in lion
• Stack "fan" view support for when dock is on left or right side of screen
• Dual core processor in iPad 2
• More RAM in iPad 2. It'll be at least 512, but I would do anything for 1GB

@Tai Shimizu - That's a great list Tai, perhaps you need to have a chat with that Filterstorm developer ;-)

There are a few things in here we had not considered before so it has given us something to think about, thanks for your comment.

My wish-list for 2011:

- iTunes 11: reorganised to make it business friendly (if they want the iPad to be a more serious contender); or a completely separate desktop app to handle sync and file management. (Move away from entertainment to a productivity focus.)

This will include:
- full wifi-sync to PC and Mac / iPad / iPhone / iPod Touch
- back-up on request (instead of every single time!)
- Documents tab for syncing and organising documents into folders & a clearer, user-friendly file
handling system on iPad via iOS4.3
- Improved performance, particularly in handling Apps and iPad desktops on-screen in iTunes
- Improved picture handling between iPad and computer to allow full access to all folders/data,
sorting, renaming on the device or on computer.

iPad 2:
- Flat back, glass-style front and rear, just like the iphone 4. Slimmer. Lighter. Same screen size.
- Retina display
- Dual core processor
- File system for docs, pics and vids - user friendly, ability to wifi sync
- Improved on-screen keyboard - cursor keys; user-definable keyboards;
- Improved support for Apple bluetooth keyboard function keys
- Universal video out for all apps (I wish!)
- Dollar price closely matches currencies across the world
- Universal 3G and tethering to any iPhone.

Well, I hope they add Flash. I really would like to upload photos to my travel blog and it requires Flash.
I think an accessory ,similar to the camera card thingy, to attach an USB drive would be cool. You know, you insert the one end into the iPad, and your USB stick into the other. I think that would be great.

Other than that, I like the size and feel of the iPad. It would be perfect if I can just get Flash!

@Simon - a well thought out list! And it all makes sense, but we are not sure how much of this you will see (but that's why it is a 'wishlist', right?). Universal video out hits a chord with us, would be fantastic for presentations, teaching and video reviews without worrying about glare etc, esp if the iPad could act as an external video source for iMovie, imagine that!

Thanks for your contribution. :-)

@Elizabeth - we won't get into the Flash debate, suffice to say we don't think that will appear any time soon in its present form.

As far as USB flash drives go, before the iOS 4 update we read about some working with the Camera Connection Kit (CCK) USB plugin and a Jailbroken iPad, but none of the 3 USB sticks we have hanging around here work out of the box (non-Jailbreak) and some have said that the iOS 4 update knocked on the head many that did work before. You could always try it with the CCK and see.

Thanks for commenting!
